SignAlphabet: Fingerspelling

Short description

Study the ASL manual alphabet with pictures, practice rounds and spelled words.

Full description

SignAlphabet helps hearing people learn to read the American Sign Language (ASL) manual alphabet, one letter at a time. It is a study aid for fingerspelling. It does not use the camera and does not grade your hand.

What is in the app:

- Alphabet: a wall of the 26 letters, each with a large picture of the hand and a written description of the handshape. Letters that are easy to confuse are linked to each other.
- Movement: J and Z are the letters that move. Their pictures show the path, and a note explains which way it goes.
- Practice: see a hand and pick the letter. Letters you miss come up more often, and you see how each round went.
- Spell: watch a word spelled one hand at a time, then type what it was. There are 412 common English words, and you choose how many seconds each letter stays on screen.
- Dark mode: the hand pictures stay on a light card, so they read the same in either theme.

What this app is not:

Fingerspelling is only a part of American Sign Language, which is a full language with its own grammar. This app does not teach ASL as a language. Pictures and text cannot show the rhythm and flow of real fingerspelling. To learn the language, learn from Deaf teachers and community classes.

SignAlphabet is not a certified course and is not endorsed by any Deaf organisation. It has not been reviewed by a signer.

Where the content comes from: the pictures are the public-domain "Sign language" set on Wikimedia Commons, credited to wpclipart.com, and were not generated by AI. The handshape descriptions were written for this app and checked against Helen Keller Services and other published sources. Sources and licences are listed in the app.

Privacy: no account, ads, analytics, tracking or in-app purchases. Your practice results stay on your device. The app asks for no Android permissions, makes no network connections and works offline.
